TallSWAG: Elle Finland

If you see a 6'6" girl happy dancing like a maniac, that's me.  I am SO excited and honored to be featured in Elle Finland!

I was featured along side of some amazing tall bloggers;  Laura Schofield from All The Tall Things, Kacy of Height of Style and Irene Naakka of Mademoiselle Pigalle

Honestly, this is one of those moments where you have to pinch yourself.  I am so thankful and blessed for everyone's support and I am amazed by the growth (pun intended) of TallSWAG this year.  I truly can't wait to see what is next!

I have to give big thank you to Elle Finland and Mirjami Pullinen for selecting me for the piece and to Kate Bowyer of YBowyer Photography for taking the beautiful photo featured in the magazine.

While I can't read the article (and would love a translation), I know how I answered their questions and would like to share it...happy reading!

Tall is Beautiful!  Don't EVER forget it!

Elle Finland Q&A

Elle Finland: What is the best style advice you’d give to your tall fellow women?

Alicia Jay: Never think of your height as a limitation.  Your style is YOUR style and you should never put it in any kind of box.  No matter what, you should and can express yourself in every way that you want to.  Don’t let the limitations in our choices dictate how you choose to express your style.  While there are more and more choices for us emerging every day, don’t be afraid to alter or create fashion into exactly what YOU want.

EF: Could you name three pieces of clothing that fit you/tall women in general perfectly? I mean the ones one should really invest in.

AJ: I think every woman should invest in a great pair of skinny jeans.  You can pair them with anything and wear them for multiple seasons.  My favorite skinny jeans are from Height Goddess.  They carry inseams up to 39” with amazing colors.  The cut and quality is amazing.  For a more curvy tall fit, PZI Jeans are great.  Their extra long skinny jeans go up to 38”, come in great options and sizes up to 18.

Second, I would say a long sleeved cardigan.  What I love about a cardigan is that you can dress it up or down.  It’s a very versatile piece that should be a staple in every closet.  You can belt it, button it, layer it…it really is a fashion jack of all trades.  I love the cardigans from Long Tall Sally.  They are plenty long in the arms and cut beautifully in the body.  Gap and Banana Republic also have cardigans that fit great.

Third, and it sounds cliché, but every tall woman should have a black dress that fits them like a glove.  Don’t be afraid to tailor this piece because it will be used time and time again (in general you should find a tailor and make them your best friend).  Ann Taylor, TopShop, Long Tall Sally, Height Goddess and Suzy Chin are my top 5 spots for amazing dresses.

And of course I can't stop at 3 so a chic blazer is a must.  You can wear them anywhere and create completely different outfits by changing the base pieces underneath.  Wear it with a pencil skirt and dress shirt for an office look and then change to skinny jeans to go hang out after work.  The Method Boutique and Banana Republic have Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and Long Tall Sally have great blazers and suiting pieces.  Also, don’t be afraid to go for a blazer with a ¾ sleeve.  You can find them at places like Forever21 and they are great for layering.

Something you can't forget...SHOES! Are shoes technically clothing? No. But they are essential in making every piece of clothing you have POP! When you wear amazing shoes, your SWAG sky rockets.  I don’t care what outfit you are wearing, it is enhanced by a sick pair of shoes.  Barefoot Tess is my go-to spot for shoes.  They carry sizes 11-15 in every style imaginable.  I also love Zappos for their choice and return policy (free shipping both ways) and Shoes of Prey because you can custom make your very own pair of shoes up to size 15.

I love those days where you have absolutely no plans.  Anything could happen.  You may go shopping, you may go to a movie or you may drop in and watch some mud wrestling...you just don't know.

When I have one of these days, my biggest question is...what do I wear? It has to be versatile, dressy yet casual, and above all super cute.  I don't care what I end up doing, as long as I look put together...I am winning.

My solution to a day of 'whatever' is classic all black with a twist.  The tunic, ankle pant and flats are extremely comfortable but the subtle details like the collar and animal print dress it up enough to make it appropriate for anything you can encounter (including a mud themed soiree).

What do you wear on your 'whatever' days?

TallSWAG in 2012

I know.  It's January 3, 2013 and she's just now getting the 2012 wrap-up on the page?  Yes.  This is true but what happened was, I just couldn't write it.  I tried 9 times over the last 4 days to write this blog but every time I typed it just seemed that my words were not genuine and I will never post something that isn't real.

In all of my 9 attempts, I started to tell you about how 'awesome the year was and while that was partly true (and I will get to that in a moment), the fact is, it was a tough one for me.

I lost my Dad.  Cancer took his life in a period of six months.  I have wanted to share that for a while now but it was too fresh. Too raw. I just couldn't form the words to tell the truth.  I was (and still am) a Daddy's girl and to have him taken from me like that was indescribable.  I think in some ways the full blow hasn't hit yet and from what I understand probably will continue to come in waves.

My Dad is and always will be one of the main contributors to who I am as a woman (the other, my amazing Mother).  In his successes and mistakes, he gave me an unbelievable foundation and I will forever be grateful to God for that.  I would not be who I am without my Father in my life.  Although I miss him to the core, a moment of his love overshadows any loss that I feel.

In loss you find amazing things about your life that were always true but are highlighted in times of darkness.  I have amazing family and friends.  I am blessed to be an Auntie to an amazing 8 year old girl who comforted me when nobody else could.  God is always there and loves you when you have nothing left to give. That there are no mistakes in life and everything, whether happy or painful, is a piece to His plan.  With Him I can get through anything.  I am strong. I am amazing.  I am created to change, live my story and share it with those that God places in my path.

If you are reading this right now, you have been placed in my path and that is my 2012 highlight.  That is awesome.  That is one of the biggest things I am grateful for.  The growth of TallSWAG in 2012 is amazing but what I find truly astounding is the support of each and every single person who supports me and TallSWAG in any way.

Unknowingly, you got me through the hardest time of my life.  In particular, your comments and emails about our fabulous tall lives validated everything I feel I was placed on this earth to do and I will not stop until it is done.  We will change the way people view 'beauty' and everything that surrounds it.  2013 will be a game changer.

Live your purpose and by all means...let your TallSWAG shine through!

Warm up the New Year

Hello beautiful!  I hope you are having the most amazing Holiday season.  I know I am and can't wait to bring in 2013.

It is super cold right now and one must stay warm on the way to the party.  On NYE why not add a little pizzazz to the warmth with some embellishment. This can come in many forms but currently I live for the faux fur collar.

I love the Fur Collared 50's Coat from Long Tall Sally because the color can go with pretty much anything you put on.  It's definitely an investment piece BUT you can use it for many winters to come.

So, step 1 to NYE style?  A coat that sets the tone for what's underneath.  Be the hottest thing AT the party and ON THE WAY to the party:-)

Party Time

Last Saturday I celebrated the fabulous birthday of my fabulous friend Sabrina.  We had a great time and her husband (who put together the soiree) did a great job of keeping it a surprise.  How sweet is it that he put the whole shindig together for his better half:-) Points!

Anyway, let's get down to what I carefully selected.  No, not the gift (well, that too)...my outfit.  So, I wasn't sure what type of dinner it was, thus I couldn't go too casual but I also didn't want to be wearing a prom dress while everyone had on club attire.  What to do?  Solution: a splash of both.

I love a little shimmer so I paired a satin blouse with these amazing Jaquard Spot Trousers from Long Tall Sally.  I absolutely love the pants because they really make any outfit pop.  Because I went all black, I needed some color so my teal babies from Bakers made an appearance.  Last, the frosting: statement necklace from Forever21 and an oversized clutch from Target.  Why?  Because oversized clutches are fierce.

So, there you have it.  My all-purpose, infused with fierce, pop-of color, oversized, surprise birthday outfit. Try saying that 3 times fast.

What do you like to wear to fabulous parties?
